The Saranac Inn Golf Course, built at the turn of the century, was designed by Seymour Dunn who said that after building over 300 golf courses in many parts of the world, Saranac Inn was his masterpiece and that anyone who learned to play golf on the Inn course would be able to give a creditable account of themselves on any course. Located on the upper Saranac it was part of the famous Saranac Inn Hotel, since torn down, which was one of the most affluent resorts in the country in its heyday.

Dunn, who was born in North Berwick, Scotland in 1882, designed The Saranac Inn course in the way all great architects do, using the natural terrain and not placing too many hazards on the course— but the few that were would tax the skill of the advanced player to the limit. He also felt that the wonderful mountain views which can be seen from all around the course, the pure mountain air and the delicious fragrance of the balsams made Saranac Inn the perfect summer golfing paradise

The classic course was sold in 1998 to Jim Connors and Steve Wilson, Lake Placid partners, by Walter Smachlo who always maintained high standards while at the helm as owner of the course.

The new owners also demand high standards of quality and have already brought increased service and an understanding of what today’s golfers are looking for with a motel overlooking the first tee, and restaurant and lounge. Their plans are to offer a first-class golfing experience to its golfing clientele with all the services of a private country club.
