The Lake Placid
Club has three spectacular courses. The par 70,
6,156 yard Mountain Course, rated 4-Stars by Golf Digest in the summer of 2006, features breathtaking views of the Adirondacks
starting with the first hole located high atop a hill beside the new
Adirondack-style lodge designed by Bill Zmistowski who also designed
a few of Jack Nicklaus' clubhouses. The setting is unsurpassed
for its views of New York's highest peaks, Mt. Marcy and Mt. Colden.
Although sheer beauty does not make a great hole, it surely enters the
equation on this 368-yard, par 4, first hole.
The par 4s offer some of the more demanding holes on the course whereas
the tenth hole, a par 5, was one of Jack Nicklaus' favorites when
he toured the course. It is 502 yards of cascading fairway, tightly
lined on the right by woods with the green resting in a lush area under
the watchful eye of Whiteface Mountain.
The lower 18 holes, known as the Links Course, at 7,006 yards with a
par of 71 will challenge and delight golfers at all levels. The course
is longer and flatter than the Mountain Course and boasts large undulating
greens, native fescue and bunker-laden fairways.
The Links Course, also rated 4-Stars by Golf Digest in the summer of 2006, is a Scottish-style golf course at its best, set in
the spectacular scenery of the Adirondack Mountains. The fifth hole,
a par 5, might well be in Scotland, with two mounds to be carried on
the fairway, but a fair green as compensation. One golf writer went
to so far as to say in Golf Digest's "Places to Play"
that the Links Course at the Club was like playing golf in Scotland
without airfare.
In 2002, Graham Cooke, a golf architect with projects throughout
the world, made some changes to the course while at the same time maintaining
the integrity of Dunn's original design. Cooke supplemented the
course with new tee locations for both men and women, and also added
length, profile and depth to a number of holes while at the same time
insuring its rich heritage.
The 15th hole now boasts over 600 yards in length and if the wind is
blowing, driver, number three wood, is not uncommon. The course has
five testing par 3 holes and four formidable finishing holes including
the 18th - a signature hole that is deceptively long with a small
green which makes for a tough but truly great hole.
The Lake Placid Club's third course, known as The Executive or
Pristine Nine, winds up the trio of courses. It is a wonderful course
for sharpening your short iron game. It is also an excellent course
for the beginning golfer with seven par 3s ranging from 90-200 yards
in length and two par 4s over 260 yards.
